Why Spiti Valley is a Must-Visit Destination
Spiti is the hardest trip on this list and the one people talk about for years afterwards. It is a high cold desert on the Tibetan plateau's edge, with Kaza at about 3,800 metres and passes higher still. Two roads reach it from Chandigarh. The Kinnaur route through Shimla, Sarahan and Nako climbs gradually over several days, which is what lets your body adjust. The Manali route over Kunzum Pass at 4,551 metres is far shorter but only open from roughly June to October, and taken in that direction it gains altitude too fast for comfort. We almost always route in via Shimla and out via Manali, which acclimatises properly and means you never drive the same road twice. Key Monastery, Chandratal, Hikkim's post office at 4,400 metres and the fossil village of Langza are all on that loop.
